Lloret de Mar Cemetery

The grounds contain elaborate sculptures, decorated mausoleums and detailed stonework featuring angels, mourning figures and floral patterns that form a collection of funerary artworks stretching across multiple terraced levels among cypress trees and Mediterranean vegetation.

The cemetery opened in 1901 under the architectural direction of Joaquim Artau i Fàbregas, funded by prosperous merchants who had acquired their fortunes in America and commissioned monumental burial sites for their families upon returning.

The cemetery serves as an architectural expression of Catalan Modernisme, a regional artistic movement of the early twentieth century that merged organic forms and artisanal details with innovative design approaches, thereby representing the emerging self-confidence of the Catalan bourgeoisie.

The cemetery sits on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean and opens daily from 8 AM to 6 PM, approximately a ten-minute walk from the center of Lloret, with comfortable footwear recommended due to uneven pathways.

The cemetery incorporates specialized architectural elements including hypogeums, cippi and Fleury crosses, where underground burial chambers, decorative grave pillars and ornamental memorial crosses combine functional burial spaces with artistic expression to create an exceptional ensemble of funerary architecture.
