Castle of Maqueda

The rectangular castle features four circular towers and walls measuring 3.5 meters in thickness, built on two different ground elevations for defense purposes.

Originally constructed with Moorish architectural elements, the fortress underwent substantial reconstruction during the 15th century under the direction of Don Gutiérrez de Cardenas.

The Spanish government designated this medieval structure as an artistic historical monument in 1931, recognizing its architectural and historical value.

While visitors can examine the castle exterior without restrictions, the interior sections currently house a Guardia Civil museum established in 2009.

The castle structure lacks a central keep, diverging from typical medieval castle designs, and incorporates distinctive merlons atop its brick-crowned walls.
