The Stone of The Empress, Historic obelisk in Kauppatori, Finland
The Stone of the Empress stands as a red granite obelisk topped with a bronze globe and two-headed eagle in Helsinki Market Square.
Finnish architect Carl Ludvig Engel designed this memorial in 1835 to commemorate Empress Alexandra's first visit to Helsinki with Nicholas I in 1833.
The memorial displays inscriptions in Finnish and Latin, reflecting the multilingual heritage of Helsinki during the period of Russian influence.
Located at the center of Market Square, this wheelchair-accessible monument serves as a meeting point for guided walking tours of Helsinki.
Russian sailors removed the bronze globe and eagle in 1917 during political changes, but these elements returned to the memorial in 1971.
