Lampan talo, Protected office building in Kruununhaka, Finland
Lampan talo is a protected office building at the intersection of Pohjoisesplanadi and Helenankatu, featuring office spaces and a ground-floor restaurant. The structure reflects early 19th century construction with functional layouts designed for both commercial and retail purposes.
Architect Pehr Granstedt designed the structure in 1814, completed in 1817 for merchant Johan Lampa. The building's name comes from its original owner, and it has endured through centuries of Helsinki's development in this central neighborhood.
It housed the first location of what would become Stockmann department store from 1858 to 1880, playing an important role in the city's retail history. The building reflects how commercial life in Helsinki evolved during the 19th century.
The building is easily accessible at a well-known intersection in central Helsinki with mixed-use spaces including public areas. Modern water, sewer, ventilation, electrical systems, and cooling equipment were installed during comprehensive renovations in 2013.
During renovation work, builders found the wooden frame in excellent condition after nearly two centuries, revealing the exceptional quality of early 19th century craftsmanship. This discovery demonstrates why the structure has survived so well through Helsinki's changing landscape.
