The Government Palace is a Neoclassical building with a grand facade of columns and arches located in Helsinki's Kruununhaka district. Inside, it houses offices for the Prime Minister and various government departments.
Construction began in 1818 and finished in 1822, originally serving as the Senate House for the region. It eventually became the principal office for Finland's government and administrative leadership.
The building forms part of the Senate Square complex, representing the administrative center of Finland and hosting government functions since its establishment.
The building sits centrally on Senate Square and is easily reached from the plaza area. Visitors should note that only certain areas are open to the public.
In 1904, a significant moment unfolded here when Eugen Schauman shot Russian Governor-General Nikolai Bobrikov on the second-floor staircase. This event left a profound mark on Finnish history and remains an important part of local memory.
