Corbie Abbey, Benedictine monastery in Corbie, France

The abbey features high stone walls, two octagonal towers, and a large church with Gothic architectural elements from the thirteenth century.

Queen Bathilde founded this religious complex in 657, establishing it with monks from Luxeuil Abbey under the leadership of Theodefrid.

The monastery developed the Caroline minuscule script in 780, which became the standard writing style throughout medieval Western Europe.

Visitors can explore the remaining structures, including parts of the church, library, and cloister, which open daily from April through October.

The abbey's scriptorium produced manuscripts with the first medieval depictions of human figures, including early illustrations of Saint Jerome.
