Abbaye de Montivilliers

Abbaye de Montivilliers is a medieval abbey featuring a large Gothic church with soaring windows and a reconstructed cloister at its heart. The grounds contain several buildings from the 15th century alongside gardens that frame the religious structures.

Founded between 682 and 684 by Saint Philibert as a women's monastery, this abbey was destroyed by Viking raids in the 9th century. Its reconstruction in 1025 restored it as a religious center and transformed its role in the region.

This abbey served as a center where women religious lived and worked together in the Normandy region for hundreds of years. The spaces they inhabited and used for prayer and teaching remain visible to visitors today.

Visitors can explore the abbey church, cloister, former hospital buildings, and surrounding gardens, typically through guided tours offered in multiple languages. It helps to check in advance which spaces are open and when tours are scheduled.

The organ here was crafted by Louis Debierre and celebrated its centennial in 1992 with a special concert performed by organist Pierre Pincemaille. This event marked an important moment for recognizing the instrument and its place in the abbey's history.
