Jouarre Abbey, Benedictine abbey in Jouarre, France
The Merovingian crypt beneath the abbey contains significant stone carvings depicting religious scenes and holds notable burials from the seventh century.
Founded around 630 by Adon following a visit from Saint Columbanus, the abbey operated as a double community with both monks and nuns under an abbess.
The monastery maintains traditional Benedictine practices with forty sisters engaging in communal prayers, readings, pottery making, and visitor services.
Located at 6 rue Montmorin in Jouarre, the abbey offers spiritual retreats and guided tours of the Merovingian crypt and Roman tower.
The abbey received immunity from episcopal control in 1225, making it directly answerable to the Pope until changes occurred in 1690.
