Liberty Enlightening the World, Replica of Statue of Liberty in Paris
The replica of the Statue of Liberty in Paris is located on the Île aux Cygnes, a man-made island in the river Seine.
This smaller version of the New York Harbor statue was given to the city of Paris by the American community in Paris, on the occasion of the centennial of the French Revolution in 1889.
The statue faces west, towards its larger sibling in New York City, symbolizing the friendship between the two countries.
Visitors can view the statue while walking along the Swan Island, which is accessible via the Pont de Grenelle bridge.
The statue holds a tablet inscribed with two dates: 'IV JUILLET 1776' (July 4, 1776: the United States Declaration of Independence) and 'XIV JUILLET 1789' (July 14, 1789: the storming of the Bastille).
