Saint-Mathieu lighthouse, Stone lighthouse at Pointe Saint-Mathieu, France

The 37-meter stone tower rises from granite cliffs, featuring a white cylindrical structure marked with a red band visible across the Iroise Sea.

Constructed in 1835 near ancient abbey ruins, this lighthouse replaced traditional coal fires that monks maintained since the Middle Ages to guide maritime traffic.

The lighthouse represents maritime heritage through its architecture, navigation technology evolution, and connection to the former Saint-Mathieu abbey complex.

Visitors can climb 163 granite steps to reach the observation platform, which offers views extending 40 kilometers across the Finistère coastline.

The lighthouse operates with Fresnel lenses projecting beams every 15 seconds using a 254-watt bulb, controlled remotely from Ushant Island since 2005.

The Most Beautiful Lighthouses in France

Maritime lighthouses guiding ships along the coasts of metropolitan France. Stone, granite, and limestone towers rise on capes, islands, and peninsulas. These historical structures, dating from the 17th to 20th century, ensure maritime navigation. Notable lighthouses include Cordouan, the oldest active lighthouse in France, and Île Vierge, the highest stone structure in Europe. Some are positioned at sea, like La Jument and La Vieille, others on the coast like Eckmühl with its 307 steps. These lighthouses demonstrate French maritime engineering.
