Basilique Saint-Eutrope de Saintes

The basilica features a double-level structure with a large upper church and an extensive crypt measuring 35 meters in length and 5 meters in height.

The construction of Saint-Eutrope Basilica began in 1081 under William VIII, Duke of Aquitaine, and received consecration from Pope Urban II in 1096.

The church displays 53 carved capitals depicting religious scenes, including the Weighing of Souls and Daniel in the Lions' Den, demonstrating medieval artistic techniques.

The basilica stands near Rue Saint-Eutrope in Saintes, with its 80-meter Gothic bell tower containing four bells, including the substantial Eutrope-Marguerite bell.

The structure includes two superimposed choirs and contains one of the largest crypts in Europe, housing the tomb of Saint Eutropius.
