The stone structure measures 126 meters in length and 102 meters in width, with an arena of 66 meters long and 39 meters wide.
The amphitheatre was constructed between 40 and 50 AD during Emperor Claudius's reign when Saintes was known as Mediolanum Santonum, capital of Aquitania.
The arena featured two main entrances: the Sanavivaria door for gladiators entering combat and the Libitinensis door for removing the deceased after battles.
The monument opens Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM, except Tuesdays and Sundays.
The structure accommodated 15,000 spectators by utilizing the natural valley slopes, reducing the need for additional construction materials.
