Porte de Gand, City gate in Lille, France

The Porte de Gand features three distinct sections with stone arches, decorated facades, and intricate architectural elements from the 17th century.

Built in 1625 as part of Lille's Spanish fortifications, the gate served as a crucial entry point and defensive structure during military conflicts.

The structure stands as a testament to French military architecture, with its original design preserved through centuries of urban development.

The gate remains accessible to pedestrians and vehicles, with a restaurant located in its upper section since 1997.

Two additional arches were incorporated into the structure in 1875 to accommodate the passage of trams until 1963.
