Herzogenburg Priory

Herzogenburg Priory is an Augustinian monastery in Herzogenburg with multiple buildings and collections across its grounds. The complex includes Baroque structures featuring a great banqueting hall, treasury, monastic library, and a coin cabinet spread throughout the site.

The monastery was founded in 1112 by Bishop Ulrich I of Passau, originally at a location called St. Georgen. Flooding problems prompted its relocation to the present site in 1244.

The priory displays late Gothic artworks including panel paintings, sculptures, and stained glass windows throughout its gallery spaces. Visitors can observe how religious art was arranged and displayed within the monastic community.

The priory is located at Stiftsgasse 1 in Herzogenburg and welcomes visitors to explore its Baroque architecture and historical collections. The grounds can be navigated on foot, with different sections available for viewing.

The Baroque picture gallery houses an unexpected artifact: a Roman helmet from around 150 AD that was discovered in a local gravel pit. This ancient object reveals the region's long history extending well before the monastery existed.
