Wasserbehälter Schmelz, Shopping center at Meiselstraße, Vienna, Austria.
Wasserbehälter Schmelz is a shopping and event center in Vienna's 15th district, housed within a substantial brick structure featuring stone cladding and large arched windows. The interior spans multiple floors, offering a mix of retail spaces and modern event facilities.
The structure was built between 1870 and 1873 to serve as a water reservoir for Vienna's First Mountain Spring Water Pipeline. After decades of operation, it was later renovated and transformed into an event center.
The converted water tank now hosts art exhibitions, fashion shows, and theatrical performances, drawing visitors who seek contemporary culture in an unusual setting. Events take place within the historic spaces, blending creative expression with the building's distinctive architecture.
The center features wheelchair-accessible entrances, making it easy to reach for all visitors. Event spaces across two levels are equipped with modern acoustic systems, allowing visitors to enjoy exhibitions and performances under optimal conditions.
The building features a sculptural ensemble from 1843 originally from the Kaiser Ferdinand Waterworks, depicting a river deity and a nymph holding a coat of arms. These artistic elements recall the importance of Vienna's historical water infrastructure and shape the center's character today.
