Mandlstein

Mandelstein is a 874-meter summit in the Waldviertel region featuring distinctive rock formations and an observation platform. From the top, you see rolling forested landscapes stretching toward the Czech border and beyond.

For centuries, this summit served as a natural boundary point between Austria and Bohemia, with its position officially recognized in border treaties. The location's role in defining territorial lines shaped how the region developed over time.

Along the hiking route, information stations explain how people in the Waldviertel and South Bohemia have adapted to living in a border region. You get a sense of local customs and what makes this area distinct from surrounding regions.

Trail number 11 starts from Moorbad Harbach and takes about 20 minutes to reach the summit from the parking area. The route follows marked paths mostly through forest, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.

An observation platform built in 2013 allows you to stand in one spot and see both Austrian and Czech territory at the same time. This vantage point makes the border feel tangible and offers an unusual way to experience two countries from a single location.
