Hoher Eichham, Alpine summit in Venediger Group, High Tauern, Austria
Hoher Eichham is a summit in the Venediger Group with an elevation of 3,371 meters (11,060 feet). Four distinct arêtes extend from the central peak in the north, east, south, and southwest directions, defining the mountain's sharp appearance.
The first documented ascent took place on July 16, 1887, when Berlin climbers reached the summit with guide Hans Hörhager. This marked the beginning of tourist mountaineering on this peak.
The mountain forms part of the High Tauern National Park, integrating alpine climbing traditions with environmental protection measures in Austria.
The climb typically begins from the Bonn-Matreier Hut at 2,750 meters (9,020 feet). The route via trail 923 through Sandboden requires approximately seven hours for the complete ascent.
Two active glaciers sit on the mountain, Nilkees to the southeast and Hexenkees to the northeast. Two other glaciers, Großer and Kleiner Eichhamkees, have shrunk to ice patches, showing how climate change affects these high peaks.
