Schloss Matzen

Schloss Matzen is a castle complex in Matzen-Raggendorf featuring a north and south wing connected by a corridor, with a round Romanesque tower on the eastern side. The ensemble is surrounded by parkland spanning approximately 200,000 square meters and includes a pond.

The first documented mention of the castle dates to 1167, when it was under the rule of the Freundsberg family. This family maintained ownership and control of the property until 1468.

The chapel in the northern wing displays Gothic features and holds late medieval paintings on its walls. These artworks offer a glimpse into the religious setting that inhabitants and visitors have experienced across centuries.
