Kremsmünster Observatory, Astronomical observatory within Benedictine monastery complex in Kremsmünster, Austria.
Kremsmünster Observatory is a 49-meter tower within a Benedictine monastery complex with nine floors. Each level contains scientific instruments for observing the sky, weather measuring devices, and various natural science collections.
The tower was built in 1749 and was one of the first tall buildings constructed for scientific research. Monks used it from the start for observing the sky and measuring weather patterns.
The tower houses collections of minerals, fossils, and preserved animals displayed across its floors. Visitors can observe how monks gathered and presented scientific objects from their era.
The tower can be explored from bottom to top, with each level displaying different types of objects and devices. It is worthwhile to allow time for the various exhibition levels to view all areas of the scientific collections.
Since 1763 the observatory has continuously recorded weather data and ranks among the oldest meteorological stations in the world. This long series of records allows researchers to track weather patterns and climate shifts across centuries.
