Kommod-Haus, Graz, Historical building in Graz, Austria
The Kommod-Haus was a building in Graz with decorative stucco details on its facade, located at the corner where Einspinnergasse and Burggasse met. The structure rose over several stories and formed a notable corner point in the old town.
The building was constructed in 1785 on the site of former imperial stables and received its protected facade in 1839 under builder Georg Hauberrisser. This transformation made it an important example of mid-19th century architecture in the city.
Over the decades, the building housed different venues including theaters, taverns, and cafes that shaped the character of the street. These changing uses reflected how the neighborhood evolved and what people wanted to do there.
The building had deteriorated significantly and repair costs were very high, which led to eventual demolition. The site is centrally located and easily reached on foot or by public transport.
After demolition, renowned architect Zaha Hadid designed a new modern building for the site. This new structure opened in February 2020 and has shaped the corner's appearance since then.
