Hornburg, Klein Sankt Paul, Medieval castle ruins in Klein Sankt Paul, Austria
The Hornburg castle complex consists of two separate structures positioned at 900 meters elevation on Hornberg mountain in the Görtschitz Valley.
First mentioned in 1140, the castle belonged to the Counts of Görz until 1304, when it was sold to Hermann Siebenbürger, the captain of Wolfsberg.
The castle ruins represent a defensive structure that protected the ancient iron trade route, where the prized Ferrum Noricum was transported from Hüttenberg mines.
The privately owned ruins remain closed to internal visits, but external viewing is permitted through hiking paths that lead around the fortress structures.
The twin castle design features an upper residential section and a lower fortification, connected by a 500-meter stretch of defensive structures.
