Hornburg, Klein Sankt Paul, Medieval castle ruins in Klein Sankt Paul, Austria
Hornburg consists of two separate castle ruins positioned at approximately 900 meters elevation on Hornberg mountain in the Görtschitztal. The two structures are connected by a chain of defensive works that extend across the mountain terrain.
The site was first recorded in 1140 and initially controlled by the Counts of Görz. In 1304 it passed to Hermann Siebenbürger, who held the position of captain at Wolfsberg.
The ruins reflect a defensive post that once guarded trade routes and protected travelers moving through the valley. Today the stone walls serve as reminders of this location's strategic role in medieval regional commerce.
The ruins remain in private hands and can only be viewed from the outside. Hiking paths lead around the structures, offering different perspectives of the fortress remains.
The two sections demonstrate a rare dual-fortress design with an upper residential area and a lower fortification. This divided function represented an unusual architectural solution for medieval defensive construction.
