Burgruine Freyenstein Neustadtl, Medieval castle ruins in Neustadtl an der Donau, Austria.
Burgruine Freyenstein Neustadtl is a castle ruin situated on a narrow rocky ridge rising above the Danube with walls still standing to significant height. The remains display visible stone foundations and wall sections from different periods of occupation.
The fortress was built around 1200 and served as a watchtower for river traffic monitoring. It was abandoned in the 17th century and has remained a ruin since then.
The ruins display medieval fortress design typical of the Danube region. Visitors can observe the thick stone construction and the distinctive hexagonal tower shape from close range.
The ruins are accessible year-round via a walking path starting from the valley below. Wear sturdy shoes for the steep climb and uneven ground around the site.
A hidden water source within the tower provided the fortress with independent water supply during sieges. This underground spring is still visible in the stonework today.
