Tscheltschnigkogel, Mountain peak in Villach, Austria
Tscheltschnigkogel is a 696-meter-high mountain peak located west of Villach with an extensive underground cave system beneath its surface. The caves run through the rock in multiple levels and form an underground network.
People settled here as early as the Copper Age around 4000 BC, as confirmed by archaeological finds. During Roman times, buildings were constructed on the mountain, some serving Christian purposes.
The mountain served as a crossing point and settlement area for different peoples throughout history. People left their marks here, which can still be seen in the rocks and caves today.
The mountain is accessible via several hiking trails, including a popular loop from Villach Warmbad. The paths are well marked, but it is important to wear sturdy shoes and watch weather conditions.
The Eggerloch cave system extends 709 meters underground and contains historical rock carvings. This significant discovery led to the closure of the caves in 2012 to protect the archaeological finds.
