Wasserleonburg, Medieval castle in Nötsch im Gailtal, Austria

Wasserleonburg is a castle at the foot of Mount Dobratsch that combines architectural elements from several centuries, featuring a Renaissance courtyard throughout its layout. The building blends different styles and creates varied impressions as you explore its spaces.

The castle was first documented in 1253 as Lewenburch and suffered damage from the 1348 earthquake that triggered a landslide on Mount Dobratsch. These early events shaped the building and left marks on its structure.

The chapel dates from the 18th century and shows ornamental details from that period, while the former horse stable now serves as a venue for events.

The castle operates as a private residence with holiday apartments and offers group tours by advance reservation. Visitors should arrange visits in advance and confirm access times to ensure a smooth experience.

Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson chose this castle for their honeymoon, staying from June through September 1937. This royal visit remains a notable chapter in the castle's story.
