Wilfersdorf Castle, Medieval castle and museum in Wilfersdorf, Austria
Wilfersdorf Castle is a four-winged water castle in the village of Wilfersdorf, Lower Austria, surrounded by a moat and set within a vineyard. Its four wings enclose a central courtyard, and the entrance is reached by crossing a stone bridge over the water.
The Liechtenstein family took possession of the site in 1436 and made it one of their main seats in the region. Around 1600, Prince Gundakar ordered a full reconstruction that gave the building its current four-winged form with a moat.
The Liechtenstein family used this place not only as a residence but also as the center of their farming activities in the region. Visitors who walk through the courtyard and into the cellars can still sense the close ties between the nobility and the land they worked.
The complex is open mainly in the warmer months, when tours and cellar visits are offered. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, since paths through the vineyard and around the outer walls can be uneven.
The stone bridge that leads into the courtyard is one of the original features from the early 17th-century reconstruction and has not been significantly altered since. Walking across it gives a sense of the scale of the water defenses that once surrounded the building on all sides.
