Wilfersdorf Castle, Medieval castle and museum in Wilfersdorf, Austria
Wilfersdorf Castle is a four-winged château with water surroundings in Austria that combines exhibition spaces, event halls, and underground wine cellars within a large vineyard area. The buildings surround a central courtyard and show the classical structure of a Renaissance castle with stone walls and bridge entrances.
The Liechtenstein family took over the castle in 1436 and shaped its form for generations to come. Around 1600, Prince Gundakar had the castle fundamentally rebuilt and created the four-winged water castle structure that survives to this day.
The castle reflects the history of a powerful family whose influence took root in the region over centuries. The place tells of authority, wealth, and the relationship between nobility and agriculture, which visitors can understand directly while exploring the rooms.
Access to the interior is limited to the warmer months, with guided tours available through audio devices in several languages. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes, as pathways go through the vineyard area and around the complex.
The wine cellars beneath the castle have been in use for several centuries and rank among the oldest production sites in the region. Wines are still made using traditional methods and tasted on site, giving visitors direct insight into wine production.
