Schober, Mountain summit in Sankt Lorenz, Austria.
Schober is a mountain in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, located between the communities of Sankt Lorenz and Fuschl am See, rising to about 1,328 feet (1,328 meters) above sea level. Its slopes are covered with mixed forest and open alpine meadows, and the summit offers a clear view over Lake Fuschl and the surrounding ridges.
The paths crossing the Schober were originally used by farmers and foresters who needed to move between the settlements around Lake Fuschl. When the Salzkammergut region opened up to travelers in the 19th century, these working routes gradually became hiking trails.
The name Schober comes from an old German word for a haystack, referring to the rounded shape of the summit as seen from the valley below. Hikers from the surrounding villages use the trails here as a regular weekend outing rather than a demanding expedition.
The most common starting point is at Forsthaus Wartenfels, where there is a parking area, and the trail requires solid footwear since some sections can be uneven or muddy after rain. Summer and early autumn tend to offer the most reliable conditions for reaching the summit.
On a clear day, the summit offers a view of three separate lakes at once: Lake Fuschl directly below, and both Lake Wolfgang and Lake Mond visible in the distance. This triple lake view is something that locals often mention but first-time visitors rarely expect to find at this elevation.
