Pfarrkirche hl. Stephanus, Gothic church in Eggenburg, Austria
The Pfarrkirche hl. Stephanus is a Gothic church with two eastern towers dating from the 12th century. The interior is divided by six bundle pillars that create three sections of equal width underneath an intricately vaulted ceiling with network ribs.
The building started as a Romanesque church in 1135 on a site outside the city walls. Gothic modifications arrived between 1482 and 1485, followed by its consecration in 1537.
The stained glass windows inside come from different periods and fill the interior with colored light that changes throughout the day. They reflect what mattered to the people who worshipped here across centuries.
The church sits at Kirchenplatz 1 and welcomes visitors during regular opening hours. Plan time to look up and around once inside, as the ceiling vaults and windows reward closer observation.
The six bundle pillars function as both structural elements and works of craftsmanship, showing the precision builders put into shaping stone. They create a visual rhythm that subtly organizes the space without feeling heavy or overwhelming.
