The stone castle stands on an elevated position near the Sill river, featuring a residential tower and remnants of ancient fortifications.
Graf Albert III of Tirol initiated the construction of Burg Trautson in 1221 as part of a network controlling the Wipptal valley region.
The castle walls contain preserved 15th-century paintings depicting tournament scenes and hunting activities, revealing medieval noble life patterns.
The remaining structures of Burg Trautson belong to the Auersperg-Trautson family, with limited access to certain areas of the property.
During World War II bombardments in 1945, the castle suffered major damage, leading to the discovery of previously unknown medieval murals.
