Burg Trautson

Burg Trautson is a stone castle positioned on elevated ground near the Sill river, featuring a residential tower and remains of ancient fortifications. The structure displays typical characteristics of a medieval noble residence from this region.

Count Albert III of Tirol founded the castle in 1221 as part of a network controlling the Wipptal valley. The fortress served as a seat for various noble families and underwent changes across several centuries.

The castle walls display preserved paintings from the 15th century showing tournament scenes and hunting activities. These images offer insight into how noble families lived during medieval times.

The castle belongs to the Auersperg-Trautson family and offers limited public access to certain areas. Checking ahead for visiting conditions and accessible sections is recommended.

The castle suffered major damage during 1945 bombardments, which led to the discovery of previously unknown medieval murals. These artistic treasures were revealed by the destruction and remain an important part of the site today.
