Kellerschlössl Dürnstein, Protected baroque castle in Dürnstein, Austria
Kellerschlössl is a Baroque castle located on the southeastern edge of Dürnstein, nestled among vineyards. It features a two-story cross-shaped floor plan with characteristic Baroque design typical of the region.
The castle was built in 1719 by master mason Gabriel Oedl following designs by architect Jakob Prandtauer. It was commissioned by Probst Hieronymus Übelbacher as a retreat and wine residence.
The main hall displays frescoes dedicated to Bacchus and mythological wine scenes. Adjacent rooms feature artwork depicting hunting, seasonal themes, and allegorical representations of the four elements.
Today the property operates as a winery and event venue where visitors can experience Austrian wine traditions. Access is best from the southeastern part of the village where clear pathways guide you to the castle.
Austrian Federal Chancellor Leopold Figl once held a personal key to the castle, using it as a private retreat during important diplomatic talks. This reflects how the property served as a confidential space for high-level visitors.
