Schloss Losensteinleithen, building in Wolfern, Austria
Schloss Losensteinleithen is a large building with a square layout and central courtyard located in Wolfern. Originally built as a water castle between 1409 and 1433 by the Losenstein family, it features thick stone walls and was expanded in the 16th century in Renaissance style.
The land was acquired by the Losenstein family in 1362 and transformed into a water castle between 1409 and 1433. After the Losenstein line ended in 1692, the castle passed to the Auersperg family and later served various institutions, including use as a school and training center from 1955 to 1993.
The castle served as a religious center where preachers held services that drew visitors from nearby Steyr, making it a focal point beyond its role as a residence. The Losenstein family's influence shaped the region for centuries, and their coat of arms still appears in Wolfern's municipal emblem today.
The castle is located in Wolfern and is protected as a historic monument today. Visitors can contact the local municipality for information about the site's history and to learn about visiting possibilities during available hours.
About 400 meters north of the castle stands a mausoleum built in 1880 by the Auersperg family as a final resting place. The simple rectangular structure with a small chapel on its roof holds the tombs of family members, with the last burial taking place there in 1998.
