Stiftskirche Mattsee - interior

Stiftskirche Mattsee is a Gothic church with a tall central nave flanked by lower side aisles that create a sense of vertical space. The choir section occupies three bays and concludes with a three-quarter closure.

The current Gothic structure dates to 1276 following a fire that destroyed the previous building. This site has hosted religious buildings since the 8th century, showing how important it remained across the centuries.

The interior displays marble altars and sculptures created by local and regional artists over centuries. These artworks show how the community invested in making this place special for worship and gathering.

Visitors can examine late Gothic gravestones and epitaphs displayed in the cloister area throughout the year. The clear layout with central nave and side aisles makes it easy to navigate and view different sections of the church.

The organ installed in 1971 combines a historic wooden case from 1710 with modern internal mechanisms. This blend of centuries allows visitors to see how the church has updated its musical instruments while respecting the original design.
