Dr.-Erich-Berger-Hütte, Mountain hut in Hopfgarten im Brixental, Austria
Dr.-Erich-Berger-Hütte is a mountain hut located in the Kitzbühel Alps at about 1,340 meters (4,400 feet) below Marchbachjoch summit, accommodating 24 guests. The facility has heated washrooms and a fully equipped kitchen for self-catering visitors.
The original Marchbachjochhütte was acquired by the Munich section of the German Alpine Association in 1928 and replaced with a new building in 1983. This renovation demonstrates the shelter's continued importance for mountaineers over the decades.
The hut is named after Dr. Erich Berger, a former chairman of the Munich Alpine Club who worked to protect mountain regions. Visitors experience here the link between mountaineering traditions and conservation efforts that define the area.
The hut is best reached on foot, so bring proper hiking gear and check weather conditions before heading out. Advance reservations are strongly recommended, especially during peak season and weekends.
In winter, visitors can reach the Wildschönau ski area after a short climb to Marchbachjoch, blending mountain shelter with winter sports access. This combination makes the location particularly attractive for visitors seeking both experiences.
