A monk named Huigen transported two jade Buddha statues from Myanmar during the Qing Dynasty. Construction began in 1882 to house these religious treasures. Damage during the early Republican period led to complete reconstruction in 1928. The complex survived political upheavals throughout the twentieth century while maintaining its function as a place of worship.
An active center of Han Buddhism where resident monks conduct daily ceremonies and religious services. Worshippers from across China visit for prayer and traditional rituals. The compound serves as a spiritual hub for the local Buddhist community, transmitting teachings and celebrating festivals according to the lunar calendar.
Metro Line 13 at Jiangning Road station provides direct access to the temple grounds. Admission costs 20 yuan for general entry plus an additional 10 yuan to view the jade statues. Modest clothing is expected as this remains an active place of worship. Morning hours between 8 and 10 are less crowded than afternoons.
The two white jade statues differ in size and representation: the sitting Buddha measures 6 feet 3 inches (190 centimeters) and features embedded emeralds, while the smaller reclining Buddha at 3 feet 2 inches (96 centimeters) depicts a resting Buddha. The rare white jade material originated from quarries in Myanmar and was specifically selected for these religious sculptures, which remain uncommon throughout China.
