It was renamed in 1991 after Max Morlock, a player of the local football club 1. FC Nürnberg.
The stadium has hosted numerous international football matches and concerts, becoming a significant part of Nuremberg's cultural scene.
With a capacity of 50,000 spectators, it is the second-largest stadium in Bavaria.
It is one of the few stadiums in Germany named after a football player.
