Burg Zieverich, castle

Welcome to the Burg Zieverich, a historic water castle located in the Bergheim district of Zieverich in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. This castle was founded in the late 13th century by Giselbertus de Ceverich, a follower of Jülich Count Gerhard, and served as a knight's seat and manor house. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times. In the 18th century, it came into the possession of Heinrich Josef Thimus, the mayor of Aachen, who received the title of Freiherr von Thimus-Zieverich, which was tied to the Majorat Zieverich and could only be inherited by the firstborn son. The title passed to his son, Karl Erhard von Thimus-Zieverich, a merchant who did not have any male heirs. Later, the castle was acquired by the Langen family, prominent entrepreneurs from Cologne. Under the ownership of Johann Gottlieb von Langen, the castle underwent significant renovations, including the construction of castle-like additions designed by Cologne architects Emil Schreiterer and Bernhard Below. Von Langen passed away at the castle on March 20, 1940. In 1952, the building complex was purchased by the foundation of Pastor Jakob van Gils, which converted the castle into an orphanage for children. Today, visitors can explore the castle's rich history and architecture. The castle's exterior features a moat and drawbridge, while the interior boasts grand halls, ornate furnishings, and historical artifacts. Visitors can also learn about the castle's former owners and their contributions to the region's history. The Burg Zieverich is open to the public for tours and events. Guided tours are available in German and English, and visitors can also explore the castle grounds on their own. The castle is a popular destination for history buffs, architecture enthusiasts, and families looking for a unique cultural experience. If you're planning a visit to the Burg Zieverich, be sure to check the castle's website for hours of operation and admission fees. Don't miss this opportunity to step back in time and explore one of Germany's most fascinating historic landmarks!
