St. Johannis

The St. Johannis church features two naves with cross-ribbed vaults supported by four octagonal columns and constructed with red bricks in monastery format.

Founded by Cistercian monks from Kloster Zinna in 1170, the church began as a simple field stone hall before its transformation in the late 15th century.

The medieval sandstone baptismal font displays Evangelist symbols, while renovations in 1901 revealed historic wall paintings depicting saints and religious symbols.

The church underwent extensive renovations between 2007 and 2009 with funding from federal, state, and local government to restore both exterior and interior elements.

Following Cistercian building traditions, the church was constructed without a bell tower, instead utilizing the separate Markt Tower for its bells.
