Stalag III-A, Prisoner of war camp in Luckenwalde, Germany
Stalag III-A was a prisoner of war camp in Luckenwalde with approximately 100 buildings and 50 tents that housed thousands of military prisoners from different nations during World War II. The grounds also contained cemetery areas and are now preserved as a historical monument.
The camp was established in 1939 when Polish prisoners arrived and lived in tents while constructing the initial barracks. Over the course of the war, it expanded into a large complex holding prisoners from across Europe.
The cemetery is divided into sections for different nationalities, with separate burial areas showing how various prisoner groups were kept apart during their time at this place.
The grounds are open to walk and provide a sense of the layout and scale of the complex. A local museum maintains an archive with personal records accessible through an interactive research station.
A typhus outbreak during the winter of 1941 to 1942 caused the deaths of around 2,500 Soviet prisoners. Mass graves created during this period remain visible on the grounds today.
