The municipality spans 355 square kilometers across northwestern Zealand, featuring sandy beaches, rolling hills, and agricultural lands between Sjællands Odde and Lammefjord.
The region emerged as an administrative district in 2007 through the merger of three former municipalities: Dragsholm, Nykøbing-Rørvig, and Trundholm.
The Solvognen, a bronze and gold sculpture depicting horses pulling a sun wagon, represents the artistic achievements of Bronze Age inhabitants in this area.

The draining of Lammefjorden in the 19th century transformed swampy terrain into productive farmland, now generating high-quality potatoes and carrots.
