Stavns Fjord, Protected fjord in Samsø Municipality, Denmark
Stavns Fjord is a protected waterway in Samsø Municipality with a circular shape and several uninhabited islands surrounded by farmland. The fjord connects to the Kattegat Sea through the shallow Besser Rev sandbar.
The fjord formed around 7,000 years ago as sea levels rose after the last ice age. Archaeological finds show that people have inhabited and used this area since the Early Stone Age.
The fjord supports seasonal fishing for garfish, shrimp, and flounder, practices that have shaped local life for generations. Today, these traditions remain visible in how local communities interact with the water throughout the year.
You can explore the fjord by boat, kayak, or on foot along marked trails from Stavns Harbour along the old fjord dike. The water is quite shallow in many areas, so different approaches work best depending on conditions and your preferences.
The shallow Hjortholmrenden waterway has tides of only about 30 centimeters, creating unusual conditions for coastal bird breeding sites. These extreme conditions make the area notable for nature protection.
