Tuborg Bottle, Observation tower in Hellerup, Denmark
The Tuborg Bottle is a 26-meter-tall structure shaped like a giant beer bottle with an internal spiral staircase that leads to an observation platform at the top. The spiral design allows visitors to climb gradually while viewing the surrounding landscape, and the platform offers sightlines across the northern Copenhagen suburbs.
The tower was built in 1888 for the Nordic Industrial Exhibition in Copenhagen and was one of the first structures to contain a hydraulic elevator powered by water pressure. This water-based lift technology was a remarkable engineering achievement for the time and made the tower a technical landmark.
The tower represents the development of Danish brewing and shows Tuborg's role as the first brewery to distribute beer in bottles. The bottle shape itself became a symbol of this innovation and visitors can still see it as a marker of that industrial era.
The climb to the platform is done via the internal spiral staircase, so visitors should be comfortable with stairs and wear appropriate footwear. Once at the top, visitors can see the northern areas clearly, especially on days with good weather and clear skies.
The original exterior made of stretched canvas was replaced with fiberglass, which kept the distinctive bottle shape while making the structure more durable. This material upgrade allowed the tower to last longer while maintaining its recognizable appearance.
