Borgvold, Historical park and fortress site in Viborg Municipality, Denmark
Borgvold is a former fortress site in Viborg now laid out as a park with canals, bridges, winding paths, and diverse tree species throughout. The grounds display several outdoor sculptures and lead visitors along a walking route through natural surroundings.
The original fortress was built in 1151 by Svend Grathe and functioned as a defensive structure until its dismantling around 1320. This demolition marked the end of its military role and led to different uses of the land later.
The music pavilion designed by architect Hagemann in 1896 remains a venue for summer concerts and community gatherings. People gather here during warmer months to enjoy outdoor performances and use the space as a meeting point.
The park is freely accessible and its pathways invite leisurely walks where visitors can discover the various art installations and plant diversity. Comfortable footwear is recommended since the terrain includes uneven surfaces and bridges.
A memorial stone with runic inscriptions from 1915 commemorates Erik Ejegod and marks the site of the former castle. The stone was deliberately placed to preserve the historical significance of this location.
