Frederiksborg Castle Church, Royal chapel in Frederiksborg Palace, Denmark
Frederiksborg Castle Church is a chapel within the palace in Hillerød, distinguished by its lavishly decorated interior. The space features an ornate altar crafted in gold, silver, and ebony by a Hamburg master craftsman, along with a historic pipe organ and intricate wooden carvings throughout.
The chapel was built for royal ceremonies and served as the site of royal anointing during Denmark's absolute monarchy period. When absolutist rule ended, this ceremonial practice ceased, yet the chapel itself has remained from its 17th-century origins.
The chapel displays coats of arms of Knights of the Order of the Elephant on its walls, one of Denmark's highest honors. These heraldic emblems represent generations of significant figures who received this distinction.
The chapel is located inside the palace and is accessible to visitors during the site's regular opening hours. Organ music is performed regularly, offering a chance to hear the historic instrument in its original setting.
The chapel survived a major palace fire in 1859 completely unharmed and kept its original 17th-century furnishings intact. This makes it one of the few rooms in the castle that has been preserved unchanged since that era.
