Fisheries and Maritime Museum

The Fisheries and Maritime Museum is a facility with indoor exhibitions, aquariums displaying native sea animals, and outdoor areas where you see historic fishing boats and tools. The collections show all aspects of traditional fishing and seafaring in this coastal region.

The facility came from an idea in the 1940s and opened as a museum in 1968. A large expansion building was added later and brought much more space for exhibitions.

The museum houses fishing equipment and boats that show how people here traditionally made their living from the sea. Visitors can see how catching methods and work aboard vessels evolved over generations.

The museum lies a few kilometers northwest of Esbjerg city center and is reachable by common transport. Visitors should allow time for both indoor and outdoor exhibitions as well as the animal feeding times.

Grey seals live at the museum, the predators of Danish seas, and visitors can watch them during feeding times. This is a rare chance to see these animals up close and in a safe setting.
