Pirita Convent, Gothic monastery ruins in Pirita district, Estonia

The remnants of this medieval monastery feature a massive late Gothic gable facade, outer walls, and extensive underground chambers with preserved stone carvings.

Founded in 1401 by merchants from Tallinn, the monastery functioned until 1577 when Russian troops under Ivan the Terrible destroyed the structure during the Livonian War.

The monastery followed the Bridgettine Order traditions, housing both monks and nuns in separate quarters while maintaining strict religious practices and scholarly activities.

Located near the Pirita Marina, the site includes both ancient ruins and a modern convent building constructed in 2001, with regular guided tours available.

The monastery church covered 1360 square meters of floor space, making it the largest religious building in medieval Estonia and a central point in Livonia.
