Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria, Orthodox Church in Alexandria
The Greek Orthodox Church of Alexandria, also known as the Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa, is an autocephalous Byzantine Rite jurisdiction of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
It was established by the Apostle Mark in the middle of the 1st century (around AD 42).
The church plays a significant role in the religious and cultural life of Alexandria, being one of the oldest Christian entities in the region.
The church's liturgical services are primarily conducted in Greek, with Arabic increasingly used in recent decades.
Despite its name, few members of the Greek Orthodox Church of Alexandria are ethnically Greek, most being found among the Arabic-speaking populations of Egypt and Sudan.
