Astorga, Historical municipality in León Province, Spain
Astorga is a municipality in León Province, sitting at 869 meters elevation in the central part of the region and linking the comarcas of Maragatería, La Cepeda, and Ribera del Órbigo. The old town arranges itself around a slightly raised core, where churches, palaces, and old houses distribute along narrow streets.
The Romans founded Asturica Augusta as an administrative center with thermal baths and advanced water supply systems during the imperial period. In the Middle Ages it became an important stage on the Way of Saint James and received its bishopric, which shapes the town's development to this day.
The name derives from the Roman Asturica Augusta and reflects its early importance as a bishopric, still visible today in the many church buildings throughout the town. Visitors notice in the old center how closely religious architecture and civic houses stand side by side, showing its centuries-long role as a spiritual hub.
The municipal tourist office at Plaza Eduardo de Castro provides information about sights, accommodation, and transport links across the province. Those arriving in early morning or late afternoon find the streets quieter and can explore the old core more easily.
Since the 16th century the town has maintained a strong chocolate manufacturing tradition, when cacao beans arrived from Mexico and numerous workshops were established. Several small producers still operate today following old recipes, which visitors can learn about during guided tours.
