Castle Freudenstein, Medieval castle in Eppan an der Weinstraße, Italy
Castle Freudenstein stands on a gentle hill above San Michele Appiano, featuring defensive towers, fortified gates, and traditional medieval architectural elements.
The castle construction began in the 13th century by Eysenbrand von Freudenstein, initially consisting of two separate structures merged by the Fuchs von Fuchsberg family.
The castle chapel contains late-Gothic wood carvings, while the residential areas display mural paintings and northern wing features detailed inlaid paneling.
The castle functions as a hotel with a golf academy and training course, offering accommodations surrounded by a landscaped park and vineyard views.
Baron Seilbald, a former German Reich ambassador in Tokyo, led renovations of the castle and redesigned its gatehouse in the early 1900s.
