Castle Freudenstein

Castle Freudenstein is a medieval fortress situated on a gentle hill above San Michele Appiano, featuring defensive towers, fortified gates, and period architectural elements. Construction began in the 13th century under Eysenbrand von Freudenstein as two separate structures that were later merged by the Fuchs von Fuchsberg family. This combination created a unified complex that reflects the evolution of fortification techniques across generations.

The chapel showcases late-Gothic wood carvings, while murals decorate the residential spaces and the northern wing displays intricate wooden inlaid work.
