Fujii-dera

Fujii-dera is a Buddhist temple in Fujiidera, located southeast of the Osaka metropolis in Osaka Prefecture. Several prayer halls surround groomed courtyards with stone lanterns, while covered walkways connect the different sections.

The foundation took place in the middle of the 8th century by members of the Fujii family, who descended from the Korean kingdom of Baekje. Later the temple was included as the fifth station on the Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage route, which links 33 sacred sites across the region.

The name comes from the Fujii noble family who founded the sanctuary in the 8th century. Today you see pilgrims carrying traditional walking staffs and wearing white shirts, stamping their prayer books at the altars.

The grounds open daily and welcome both worshippers and visitors on pilgrimage. The site sits about 15 kilometers (9 miles) southeast of central Osaka and can be reached easily via Fujiidera Station.

The grounds offer areas for the Sennichi Mairi ritual, in which worshippers complete a total of one thousand visits to earn spiritual merit. Participants keep a pilgrimage record over years, marking each visit as it happens.
