Luokavos kalnas, Ancient hillfort in Ramučiai, Lithuania
Luokavos kalnas is a hillfort in Ramučiai with a platform roughly 60 by 18 meters rising about 20 meters high. The site still shows earthen rampart remains and archaeological layers with traces of human activity.
The fortification began in the first millennium and served as a defensive structure through the 13th century. Archaeological excavations in the 1960s revealed evidence of continuous habitation at this location.
The site shows traces of early Baltic settlement through pottery and tools found in the cultural layer. These discoveries help researchers understand how people lived and worked here long ago.
To reach the hillfort, follow the route through Ramučiai toward Vegeriai and turn onto a forest road after the first canal. The site is accessible on foot but can become muddy in wet weather.
Earthen rampart remains measuring roughly 0.5 meters high and 5 meters wide are still visible on the northwest section. These physical traces give visitors a direct sense of the original defensive structure.
